This symposium is organized by colleagues of Dr. Geoff Martin to honor his distinguished contributions in the fields of port earthquake engineering, port infrastructure, and performance-based seismic engineering practice. Dr. Martin has been actively engaged in policy-making efforts aimed at improving seismic safety measures and resilience. Following the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Dr. Martin was appointed by the then Governor of California to serve on the California Seismic Safety Commission Panel to review the effects of the earthquake and develop policy implications. In addition to his groundbreaking contributions to the field, Dr. Martin is Emeritus Professor at University of Southern California, consultant, and recipient of prestigious industry awards, including the 2012 ASCE H. Bolton Seed Medal.
With over 50 years of experience, Dr. Martin has made significant contributions to the advancement of earthquake engineering earning international acclaim for his expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing seismic engineering practices. In the early 1990’s, Dr. Martin served as a Technical Consultant for the Port of Los Angeles’ ambitious 2020 Project, where he conducted comprehensive reviews of seismic design criteria and foundation design, ensuring the project’s resilience against seismic events.
