The event series “Milestones of modern diabetology”: Symptoms of diabetes have been known since ancient times, and yet 100 years ago, type 1 diabetes was a fatal disease. Patients could survive for one to two years thanks to a diet that was very low in carbohydrates before they became emaciated and fell into a diabetic coma and died. There were hardly any treatment options. Then, in 1921, there was sudden hope thanks to groundbreaking achievements: two Canadian researchers were the first to successfully isolate insulin. In doing so, they laid the foundation for the first effective treatment of diabetes mellitus – a milestone in medical history. In the years that followed, therapy made rapid progress. Insulin delivery and glucose monitoring devices have continued to improve over time, and research and industry continue to work on technological advances to enable people with diabetes to live a better life with a higher quality of life.
